Dermalogica for Dry Skin

Dry Skin Skincare Range Online

Is your skin feeling tight and dry? Tightness and dryness are tell-tale signs of dry and dehydrated skin. But these two conditions with similar symptoms have very different triggers at a cellular level. So what's the difference? Dry skin generally refers to skin that is lacking in oil where as dehydrated skin is characterised by lack of moisture. That is; a lack of water, not oil. This explains why even oily skin can experience dehydration. Both dry and dehydrated skin can experience: irritation, inflammation and itchiness, a feeling of tightness or tautness, a look or feel of roughness, slight to severe flaking and scaling, fine lines, cracks that can sometimes bleed and severe redness. One of the biggest consequences is an increase in sensitivity, as dryness and dehydration are precursors to sensitised skin.

The three main contributors to dry skin are Intrinsic Ageing, Weather/External Elements and Lifestyle. Intrinsic Ageing is more about genetics than lifestyle (Lifestyle induced ageing refers to premature ageing). The glands that produce oil become less active with age, and the skin's natural hydraters decline over the years. Ageing can also cause the blood flow in the skin to decrease, causing a drop in oil production. Prolonged exposure to the weather and external elements such as the sun can cause water to evaporate from the skin. Also cold winds, air conditioning units, forced air heating and low temperatures can also dry out the skin. Lifestyle trends such as fat free diets can deprive our bodies of skin-friendly Essential-Fatty-Acids (EFAs). A lack of EFAs can result in chronic itching, dryness, scaling and thinning. Excess intake of alcohol and certain medications can also contribute to bad skin.
