What is rosacea?
Rosacea is an uneven rash that occurs on the skin causing facial redness. It affects adult men and women. Rosacea is sometimes called ‘acne rosacea’ as spots and pustules may also occur with the condition however it differs from acne in that the skin may also feel hot and swollen and be aggravated by certain weather conditions or foods. Rosacea is usually localised to the nose and cheek area.

Rosacea causes
It is thought that overactive facial blood vessels may cause rosacea skin however the reason as to why it occurs in some people is unknown. There are several factors that may explain why redness on the face occurs. These include genetics, the environment, the contraceptive pill, hormone imbalance and vascular factors.

Rosacea symptoms
Symptoms of rosacea include:

Facial redness.

Frequent flushing/blushing of the skin.

Dry, flaky facial skin.

Red pustules on the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead.

Persistent red veins (telangiectasia).

Reacting to make-up, face creams, sunscreens and topical steroids.

Condition is aggravated by sun exposure.

Condition aggravated by spicy foods and alcohol.

Sore and red eyelids (blepharitis).

Enlarging of the nose with prominent pores (rhinophyma).

Rosacea treatment
A doctor usually prescribes rosacea treatments after a diagnosis is made. The standard treatment for rosacea is antibiotics combined with a topical antibiotic cream or gel.
Whilst Rosacea may not be curable, it can be treated and with the right care kept at bay, and flare up’s prevented.

Minimizing rosacea flare-ups

Avoid spicy food, hot drinks and alcohol.

Protect your skin from extreme weather – hot sun, the cold and wind.

Avoid baths and showers that are very hot – keep the water tepid.

Protect your skin from the sun using a sunscreen formulated for sensitive skin with an SPF of 15 or higher.

Avoid irritating the skin by massaging, rubbing or scrubbing when you wash or cleanse.

Avoid oil-based face creams, makeup and other products that contain fragrances or alcohol.

Rosacea skin care
For redness relief I recommend The Dermalogica UltraCalming Redness Relief, it is formulated for sensitive skin and are recommended for rosacea. This 3 in 1 product relieves and protects against inflammation caused by rosacea, provides an SPF of 20 and provides a sheer green tint that counteracts the appearance of redness on the face. This product contains no artificial fragrance or colour.

I strongly recommend ID Bare Minerals Foundation for Rosacea sufferers. It is natural, mineral based, paraben, talc and fragrance free, so it is suitable for even the most sensitive skin types. It also give fantastic coverage on blemishes, as well as reddened areas of the face.

Australian Fashion Week 2011 ran last month from 2-6 May and was once again an extravaganza in all that is fabulous when it comes to fashion, hair and beauty!
Day 1 opened with a gorgeous summery collection by Zimmerman and throughout the day certain key trends were emerging such as floral prints, acid shades of yellow and tangerine and lots of floaty and sheer fabrics.

Key trends in fashion that emerged over the week at Rosemount Fashion Week included:
Colour blocking – Come the spring and summer we are going to be seeing a lot of bright colours. Think tangerine, acid yellow and cobalt blue. Colour blocking means mixing bright colours together and this is a massive trend for the summer. Designers featuring colour-blocked items included Lisa Ho, Camilla & Marc, Ellery and Alex Perry.

Prints – Perhaps influenced by the spring and summer 1970s trend, prints were back with a vengeance at Australian Fashion Week. Paisley, floral, graphic and Oriental prints were all seen on the catwalks. Little Joe Woman featured 70s inspired prints in pastel tones and veteran supermodel Yasmin Le Bon was persuaded by fellow model turned designer Gail Elliot to model for this show.

All white – The all white look is another popular trend for this spring and summer. Rachel Gilbert, Bec & Bridge and Zimmerman all opted to send models out in all white dresses or separates for a cool, summery look.

Sheer fabrics – Diaphanous, sheer fabrics were all over the catwalks at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week. The look is either completely sheer, for the very brave or the very toned, or panelled and sheer, with skirts and blouses featuring sheer panels for a sexy glimpse of flesh. Designers Christopher Esber, Alice McCall and Stolen Girlfriends Club all used sheer fabrics in their collections.
Redken were the official hair partner of Rosemount Fashion Week for the 5th year running and didn’t disappoint with their cutting edge hairstyles featured at over 20 runway shows. Working with over 45 designers throughout fashion week Redken stylists were handpicked from all over Australia.
Another stroke of genius featured the funky, pop-up Redken Retreat salon just outside the catwalk shows. Attendees of Australian Fashion week could drop in and enjoy a style makeover at the Redken Retreat before leaving with a bunch of hand-selected products in a goody bag!

Redken Easy Braid: New woven top-knots and disheveled braids.
Braiding is set to be another hair trend seen on the runway this season where classic chignons and top knots are given a modern twist. This trend fuses various braiding, back combing and positioning techniques inspired by the 50s and 60s and given a contemporary edge with a dishevelled, ruffled undone elegance. The key for this trend is not to make it look tight. It’s the looseness and slight untidiness of this up style hair trend that makes it wearable and versatile.

Recreating This Look:

Update a polished classic chignon by braiding around the hairline, creating a halo effect. Twist the end of the braid into a rosette shape and pin into place. Tie lengths back into a bunched chignon for a feminine yet effortless style and finish the look with Redken Vinyl Glam 02 mega shine spray.

The pony tail is a great starting point when creating the season high top knot. Firstly, prepare the hair by using Redken Satinwear 02 ultimate blow-dry lotion. Then instead of twisting the lengths into a standard ballerina bun, try plaiting the pony tail straight and secure at the end with a hair tie. Tease the plait with your fingers to get a soft ruffled texture and help loosen the plait. Fold and twist into a quiff shape and pin in place for a sultry, stunning up do

Give top knot styles a sleek finish by spraying Redken Quick Dry 18 instant finishing spray on to the back lengths to tame any fly away hairs. By keeping the back lengths tidy and smooth with help accentuate the ruffled texture of the braided bun on top.

ghd also had a team at Australian Fashion Week 2011 featuring hair directors Alan White, Renya Xydis, Jayne Wild and Sophie Roberts who were there to create looks for designer shows such as Romance Was Born, Dion Lee, Manning Cartell, Kirrily Johnston and Lover. Stylists and assistants from ghd salons across Australia were recruited to be part of the backstage teams.

Recreating This Look by Sophie Roberts, ghd Hair Director:

1. Cut a low (just below arch of brow) and deep (use top of ear as a guide) side part on left hand side of the head using the ghd Tail Comb, or a comb with a metal end for military precision.
2. Using a ghd Oval Dressing Brush, wrap dry the hair with a blow dryer, smoothing it against head to establish a zero volume finish.
3. Smooth out the each section of hair with a ghd Gold Classic styler and ghd Ultimate Hairspray to achieve a poker straight finish.
4. Comb the hair at front so it travels directly over the hairline, leaving the part line at top of head exposed. Pull the hair into a ponytail at the nape of the neck and secure with a hat elastic.
5. Wrap the ponytail with a hair net and twist the hair into a scroll, securing it with U pins.
6. Apply ghd Precision Wax to finesse the hair line and part line, then set with a blow dryer.
7. To achieve the black matte finish, spray the hair with a black dry shampoo until it is completely covered.

Make-up artist Napoleon Perdis directed the looks for 17 shows at fashion week including Dion Lee, Rachel Gilbert, Alex Perry and Sabatini.
The Alex Perry show saw models sporting Napoleon Perdis make-up in intense colours to go with the acid shades on the catwalks. A look the beauty editors loved featured bright yellow eyeliner used in the corners of the eyes, leading outwards to a vibrant violet shade, finished off with a sweep of graphic black eyeliner extending out towards the temples.

The make-up at Sabatini drew pure inspiration from 60s fashion icon Twiggy when it came to the eyes with double layers of eyelashes on top and a single layer along the lower lid. The lips were less 60s inspired, no pale pinks here, and coloured deep burgundy providing a gorgeous contrast to the porcelain doll pale complexion.

“I’m so excited to be working with ghd, especially using their tools on my ‘California Dreams’ tour to get me stage ready. ghd products have a reputation of being the best products in the biz, and I like being associated with that.”

Katy and ghd announced their collaboration in March leaving us all in anticipation to see the advertising campaign. And the campaign certainly doesn’t disappoint – legendary photographer David LaChappelle, who is known for his innovative and iconic images of the rich and famous, shot the images. ghd’s new ad campaign features Katy sporting three different hair looks from different eras to promote three styles of limited edition ghd straighteners.

The Boho Chic Limited Edition straighteners photo features Katy with 70s inspired hair, think bohemian loose waves and the natural ‘neo-hippy’ look. The Glamour Limited Edition straighteners pic sees Katy as a sultry 50s screen siren with glamorous soft waves. And finally the New Wave Limited Edition straighteners snap shows Katy in full 80s glam mode looking sexy and sassy by the pool with big, bouncy curls – in other words ‘big’ hair!

Paul Stoneham, CEO of GHD says of the collaboration with Katy:

“Katy is the epitome of modern fashion and styling. Her unique, ever changing looks are the envy of style devotees around the world. Katy completely embodies ghd’s spirit of female transformation and empowerment, as she is seen as a cutting edge style icon unafraid to push fashion and beauty boundaries. Sassy, stylish and sexy, Katy is the perfect partner for ghd.”

• Ceramic heaters and contoured plates
• Rounded barrel

Ingrown hairs are common amongst both Women and Men, particularly as a result of shaving or waxing errors. When a shortened hair becomes sharp, it may force itself sideways and create a painful poke in skin. Ingrown hairs also occur when dead skin cells block follicle openings. It can be painful, but careful hair removal and daily exfoliation can prevent legs, underarms and bikini area from ingrown suffering.

What does an ingrown hair look like?
There are several stages of an ingrown, as well as varying severities. Generally an ingrown hair looks a little like a pimple. It will begin as a raised slightly tender reddened bump. As the issue progresses it may develop a white puss head, or you may see the hair beneath the skin as it grows and doesn’t come to the surface.

Preventing ingrown hairs
Shaving is the most common form of hair removal, and for good reason. It is quick, effortless and painless. Ingrown hairs are most commonly seen from the shavers of the world. Follow a few simple tips and techniques, if you are not already to lessen the possibility of developing ingrown hairs.

Shave in the direction of hair growth.
When you shave, you are simply removing the hair, as close to the skin as possible with a blade. Shaving against the grain will give a closer shave, as you are cutting from beneath the hair and the shorter hair, the more chance of it ingrowing. The thicker the hair, also the greater the change of ingrown hairs developing, so if you are shaving a thick, coarse or curly area, then always shave with the grain, or in the direction of hair growth to minimise your chances.

There are a range of products that you can introduce to your shaving routine to help with preventing ingrown hairs.

Dermalogica Pre Shave Guard
This pre shave product is fantastic for anyone shaving a coarse area. It is a thick prepping cream that contains camphor; this helps to lift the hair from the skin. It also softens the stubble to give a better shave.
Dermalogica Post Shave Balm
This is great for men’s after a shave. It is designed to specifically help fight ingrowns. This cooling balm contains Salicylic Acid, which is an AHA that exfoliates dead skin cells, gentle. This ingredient clears accumulated dead skin cells to help prevent and correct ingrown and bumps.

Don’t be afraid of waxing – now we know that there are some areas that you cant wax, and we don’t expect you men to attempt at waxing your beard, but it is a option for other areas. The obvious difference between shaving and waxing is that waxing is removing the hair from the root rather than cutting it at the surface. Removing the hair from the room doesn’t prevent you from developing ingrown hairs as when the hair regrows, it can deviate course before reaching the surface, and grow into the skin. This is more common when the hair is thicker or curly, like on the bikini area, or men. The key with waxing, be it an at home wax, or a salon visit, is exfoliation and post wax care.
Exfoliating with a mild AHA scrub, such as ASAP Revitalising Body Scrub will ensure that you have ridded any skin cell build up which will result in a better and easier wax. It is important to continue to exfoliate a couple of times a week after the wax too, maintaining a clear follicle with no build up will mean the regrowing hair has more chance of pointing I the right direction and coming through the surface as desired.

Whatever hair removal technique you opt for moisturisation is highly important. I like to recommend an AHA based one, and love the ASAP Revitalising Body Moist. It contains Green tea and essential oils, as well as Glycolic Acid to both moisturise, protect, and gently resurface the skin, which most importantly prevents ingrown hairs returning.

Ingrown Hairs Treatments
If you have developed an ingrown, then you can take a couple of steps to ensure that it’s under control as quickly as possible. Although recommended as a pimple treatment, Payot Pate Gris , is perfect for ingrown hair treatment. It contains shale extract, which is highly soothing, anti-bacterial and powerful drawing properties. When applied it draws the hair to the surface.
Try not to pick at and try and push the hair to the surface if you cant see it. This will most likely result in a scabbed area that is still ingrown.
If your symptoms persist for a prolonged time, then it might be an idea to take a trip to the doctor to have it lanced.

Silky Smooth, hair free skin is simple, all it takes are a few simple products and a bit of technique know how’s and you can be ingrown free.

Clarins, one of the leading skincare companies is set to release the latest weapon in anti-aging range skincare – Clarins Vital Light. Vital light is aimed for women who are experiencing wrinkles, less firm skin and loss of deep permanent luminosity.

Using the power of pioneer plants:
Cochlearia – helps diminish the appearance of visible signs of ageing on the skin
Waltheria – Boosts collagen production and helps firm skin
Spergularia – A more luminous even complexion
The three pioneer plants work together to recapture the luminosity and firmness of youthful looking skin despite the years. Over time the result are smoother, firmer skin with fewer wrinkles, reduced dark spots and a renewed deep luminosity.

The Vita light range has three day creams, to cater for different skin type’s; normal, dry, and one that contains a SPF of 30 to help prevent aging from the sun. The creams are quickly absorbed which leaves skin radiant, and glowing from the inside.

Clarins Vita Light also has two night creams, one for normal and one for dry skin. Night after night, wrinkles are smoothed and skin is left feeling revitalised and regains its rosy glow.

Using both the day and night cream will create a dual action that will help fight the visible appearance of skin ageing on every front.
