It can be hard to avoid using heat on your hair. We are all after healthy, sleek looking hair – but sometimes in our mission to achieve this with styling tools we end up damaging our hair which then creates the need for more styling tools which creates more damage… You see where I’m going with this!
It can be a hard cycle to break but there are some things you can do to protect your hair from heat damage, and in turn make your hair stronger, healthier and shinier.
How to Protect Your Hair from Heat Damage
Buy Good Quality Tools
Using cheap straighteners or hair dryers from Big W might save you in the short term – but in the long term your hair is the real loser. It can be a bit of an investment to purchase a professional quality straightener and dryer but they are more expensive for a reason. Most have protective coatings on the plate or advanced technology to minimise heat damage such as the ghd platinum straightener or the Parlux 385 hairdryer.
Dial Down the Heat
Good quality tools will generally have more than one heat setting. This means you don’t always have to have your products on the highest level of heat! The Cloud Nine Original Iron for instance has 5 different heat settings ranging from 100 – 200 degrees. Know your hair type and figure out which is the optimum temperature for you. Cloud Nine recommends:
Use a Heat Protectant
Heat protectants now come in various forms from sprays, creams & oils. Again it is recommended you use the best for your hair type to prevent hair feeling weighed down or sticky. Try Nak Heat Beat for fine hair or Nioxin 3D Styling Therm Activ Protector for thicker hair.
Lay off the heat tools if possible
If all else fails – it might be better to let your natural hair be and go without heat styling (at least for a few days). If you blow dry and straighten your hair properly you might be able to avoid repeating this process all week. If your hair is super oily and you can’t go all week without washing – try and only heat style every second day. Dry shampoo and the messy bun are your new best friend!
