Choosing the right skincare

Choosing the right skincare for your skin type is vital to either maintaining or helping to correct your skin to a more normal type skin. Using the wrong products, even though they could have great ingredients, might not only be a waste of your money but can make your skin concerns even worse. Understanding what type of skin you have will help you understand what products can assist you with your needs.

When we talk about skin TYPES we are generally referring to the amount of oil production on the skin. The 3 main types are dry, normal and oily. Some people can have a combination of 2 skin types, which is referred to as combination skin. When we talk about skin CONCERNS we are talking about a range of issues that the skin can have including dehydration, wrinkles, sun damage, blackheads, breakout, scarring, loss of elasticity, flakiness, dark spots etc.
Normal Skin
Normal skin means that your skin is neither oily nor dry, it has an even skin tone with no, black heads, visible pores and naturally moisturises itself. Your skin will never appear shiny, it will not need blotting or powder touch ups through out the day and people tell you they wish they had skin like yours. Normal skin is an exception, not normally the rule and although you may have a normal skin type you can still face skincare concerns such as sun damage and wrinkles.

Products: Normal skin types will not have to worry about their skin concerns as much as other skin types. Products for oily skin will be too drying on normal skin and products designed for dry skin will leave a greasy residue. Best practice would be to use gentle products while protecting your skin from the UV damage, toxins, hormonal imbalances and stress.

Oily Skin
Oily skin can be a result of hormonal changes and can result in blackheads, breakouts and white bumps. Oily skin will appear shiny after only hours of cleansing and will appear greasy by midday. Makeup will tend to not last on oily skin and the more oily areas will have blackheads, white bumps or acne.

Products: Drying products, products with alcohol and pore-clogging products will make your skin worse. The glands job is to secrete sebum (oil) onto the surface of the skin, which helps to protect the skin. If you then strip your skin of Sebum your glands will naturally think your skin is dry therefore creating more oil, and more of an oily skin problem for you.  Using drying products will only make your skin try to produce more oil. Alcohol, menthol, mint, eucalyptus and lemon products are actually irritating and although they may feel as though they are helping they are actually bad for your skin. Solid products such as soap bars and stick foundations will clog your pores and look greasy on your skin. Using granular scrubs on active acne and pustules can damage the breakout and spread bacteria over the face creating more breakouts.

Try to stick to gel cleansers, serums or gel formulations.  Cleanse twice a day, use an alcohol free toner, exfoliate to remove build up and dead skin and try to use a pressed powder for coverage, one with SPF is important as you should not be using heavy sunscreens but still have to protect your skin from the sun. Hydrate your skin at night with a lightweight, non-pore clogging, serum, gel or liquid. Try to also use blotting papers to remove excess oil and dust with your pressed SPF+ powder to keep you looking fresh through out the day.

Combination Skin
Combination skin is when you have two or more skin types. For example you may have normal skin generally but an oily t-zone (forehead, nose and chin), which gets shiny through the day. You could also be normal-dry. Typically, combination skin will be dry or flakey with an oily t-zone section (forehead, nose and chin). But it can also include skin care concerns such as rosacea, wrinkles and breakouts.

Products: In most cases we would suggest using more than one product on combination skin. It can be difficult to find the right product for a combination skin. Try a starter pack in your combination type (most brands have them) so you can try why what works for you. Give your products a good month of using day and night as directed to see results.

Many moisturisers will be too rich for oily t-zone areas, using an oil free moisturiser will be suitable for dryer areas as well as the t-zone section while a light weight, oil absorbing products such as a gel or serum on the t-zone will help reduce grease spots.

We Recommend:  Each combination will require different products; Medik8 PoreClease Gel is a good product to start with. If you are after oil control try Dermalogica Oil Control Lotion
Acne Prone Skin
Acne is an inflammatory disorder, acne is caused by hormonal activity, inflammation, over production of oil, excessive shedding of dead skin cells, build up of bacteria and reactions/irritation. If you suffer from acne do not use harsh or irritating skincare products, do not use bar soap, bar cleansers or stock foundations. Acne can be controlled but scarring can last a lifetime, DO NOT pick at your face. Also avoid thick hair styling products especially if your hair touches your face.

Products: If you are prone to acne start with an anti-bacterial cleanser. Ingredients such as salicylic acid, niacin amide and tea tree oil will all help with acne symptoms.

We Recommend:  Medik8 Beta Cleanse, Medik8 BetaGel Serum, Jane Iredale Mineral Makeup, Youngblood Mineral Makeup
Ageing Skin
Wrinkles can start showing up as early as your mid twenties and some major causes (other than simply ageing) include sun damage, genetics, hormone loss, muscle movement, fat depletion and external factors such as smoke and pollution.

Products: Try to replenish your skin with what it has lost over the years, tools that will help regenerate cells. That means lots of anti-oxidants, vitamins and everything SPF.
