How to get rid of pimples

If you’re struggling to rid yourself of pimples, whether they’re on your face, your back, or elsewhere – there are things you can do to help get rid of them. Not all pimple remedies are effective, but many of the best anti-pimple products on the market today are rooted in dermatology, meaning they’re scientifically formulated to combat pimples.

Before investing in creams and potions to put your pimples away for life, it’s important to understand what pimples are and why they form, which in turn should help us to understand how to get rid of – and prevent – pimples in the future.

What are pimples and how do they form?

A pimple is effectively the result of excess sebum and dead skin cells which get trapped in the pores of the skin. This happens when sebaceous glands, which are tiny glands near the surface of your skin, produce too much sebum. Sebum is an oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands to lubricate the skin and hair; when follicles get plugged up with too much sebum near the surface of the skin, a pimple forms.

It’s thought that the production of excess sebum and therefore the formation of pimples is related to levels of hormones in the body. This is why teenagers often suffer from acne – because their bodies are producing excess testosterone – and why adult women are more likely to suffer from acne during their periods or during pregnancy.

How to get rid of pimples

Now that we know what pimples are, the next step is to understand how this can help us to get rid of them. Treatments for getting rid of acne target a myriad of different causes of pimples, and for this reason often what works for one person might be a little different than what works for someone else. However, most effective pimple treatments rely on a combination of:

– Retinoids, a Vitamin A treatment that can help to unblock the pores.
– Antibiotics, in cases where acne may be caused by bacteria on the skin.
– Hormone treatments, for example, the contraceptive pill, in cases where hormones may be causing acne.
– Light or laser therapies.

In addition to treatments like this, we can do some simple things to help get rid of pimples. Wash your face with a mild soap or cleanser regularly, and avoid touching sores or pimples with unclean hands, because this can make pimples worse by adding bacteria to the skin.

Tips for pimple prevention

Of course, the best treatment is always prevention; you can help to prevent the formation of pimples by following a daily skincare routine which includes:

– Washing your face, which will help wash away excess sebum and bacteria;
– Moisturising, to keep your skin hydrated;
– Limiting makeup, especially makeup with ingredients that may cause acne;
– Avoid touching your face, especially with unclean hands.
