What is Botox?

Botox is a neurotoxin derived from Clostridium botulinum, an organism found in the natural environment where it is largely inactive and non-toxic. In it’s natural environment Botox is relatively harmless, problems can arise however if the bacteria starts producing botulinum toxin, the deadly neurotoxin responsible for botulism. In high concentrations botulism toxins can cause death, but regardless of it’s cost and toxicity Botox is a highly sought after commodity. Botulinium toxin is injected into humans in incredibly small doses for mainly cosmetic reasons as it stops signals from nerve cells reaching muscles, therefore paralysing them. This prevents frowning and squinting which often leads to premature signs of ageing such as fine lines and wrinkles. Botox is also used in some cases for eye squints, migraines, excessive sweating and leaky bladders.

How do you get Botox?

Botox is administered into humans by mixing the powder with saline and making small injections directly into the neuromuscular tissue. The process is usually not particularly painful, more like a series of sharp pricks into the desired area. It can take up to 48 hours to take full effect. A unit of Botox will set you back around $250, one unit will do your forehead or your eye area so if you want more than one area done you’re looking upwards of $500. Results will last anywhere from four to twelve months depending on your skin.

Botox Side Effects

Injections with Botox are generally well tolerated with few side effects but it can cause the below:

– Mild Pain

– Numbness

– Headache

– Nausea

– Temporary Eye or Brow Drooping

– Bleeding

– Blurred Vision

– Fatigue
